PhD-Position at IFM-GEOMAR in the Excellence Cluster “The Future Ocean” in the project “The influence of light fluctuations on ocean heating and photosynthesis”.
A Master or German Diploma degree in physics, mathematics, meteorology or oceanography is required. The PhD candidate will improve and apply a radiative transfer model based on the Monte-Carlo technique to simulate the radiative transfer from the intersection ocean/atmosphere into the water column. The work aims at determining the spectral light availability in the water column as a function of the sea surface variability. In collaboration with working groups on marine biology and marine chemistry at IFM-GEOMAR and at the University of Kiel the influence of light flucuations on heating rates, photosynthesis and photolysis will be investigated.
The position is initially limited to two years. However, a continuation of at least one year is intended. The salary will be according to the BAT IIa/2 pay scale.
The Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences is an equal opportunity employer and encourages female scientists and scientists with disabilities to apply. Applications should be sent no later than 1.March 2007 under the keyword “ocean optics” to:
