Canada: Post Doctoral Position in Ocean Data Assimilation

The Memorial University of Newfoundland invites applications for a Postdoctoral or Research Associate position in ocean data assimilation. The successful candidate will join a network “Prediction and Predictability of the Global Atmosphere-Ocean System from Days to Decades”, recently funded by the Canadian Foundation for Climate and Atmospheric Sciences. The overall goal of the network is to improve forecasts of the ocean and atmosphere on time-scales of days to decades. The project involves development of methods for ocean data assimilation of a wide range of data types, including satellite observations and temperature and salinity profiles from Argo floats.

Specific areas of research will include ocean modeling, sequential data assimilation, and operational ocean forecasting. The successful applicants will have a Ph.D. in Physical Oceanography, Atmospheric Science or related discipline. Experience in running and developing ocean and/or atmosphere models is desirable. Appointment will begin as soon as possible after February 1, 2007 and will initially be for a 12 month period. Extensions may be granted for up to three more years subject to performance. The annual salary will be commensurate with qualifications and experience.

Applicants should send a statement of interest, curriculum vitae including a list of publications, and the names and addresses of three references to:
