The Australian National Univ : Research Students Scholarships

ANU funds and administers a range of scholarships for PhD, Professional Doctorate and Master by research study. The University also administers a number of scholarships funded by the Australian Government and other sources external to the University. The University’s aim is to attract research degree applicants who have a proven capacity for research.

Applicants for research degree scholarships must hold a Bachelor degree with at least upper second class honours although competition is such that applicants usually have to hold a first class honours degree to be competitive (and for some scholarships, this is mandatory), or a Master by coursework or a Graduate Diploma (which must be completed at a level equivalent to first or upper second-class honours) degree from a recognised University. In special cases, applicants with other qualifications and/or research experience may be considered. Some scholarships are open both to applicants who are Australian citizens/permanent residents or New Zealand citizens and those who are nationals of other countries, while others are open to one or other category only.

Many graduate research scholarships are offered by individual Colleges. It is important that students specify the proposed location for their studies and a prospective supervisor on their application form.

You are, therefore, strongly encouraged to contact the relevant Graduate Studies Convener or a prospective supervisor, before lodging an application, to discuss the proposed research topic and related matters.

To apply for an ANU scholarship, you need to complete the Research Program and Scholarship application forms. Applications can be lodged online or by downloading the available forms and forwarding to us www.anu.edu.au/sas/forms, together with the required papers.

Research Program applications may be made at any time of year, but there are closing dates for scholarship applications (see below) and most scholarships must be taken up within a certain time-frame.

Scholarships are available to all Graduate Research Study Fields, unless otherwise stated. Applicants may choose their ANU Location of Study, unless otherwise stated. There are a number of scholarships offered in each category, unless otherwise stated.

Domestic and international candidates are now eligible to be considered for some scholarships if they commenced their HDR in 2008, if, due to the timing of their application they were not able to apply by the 2007 closing date. The 2008 closing dates still need to be adhered to, and funding will not commence until the beginning of 2009 if successful.
